Description This unit describes the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to officiate surf life saving at the advanced level. This unit focuses on the ability to apply the rules of surf life saving, use communication strategies, demonstrate correct positioning and manage results of advanced level surf life saving competitions.No licensing, regulatory or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of endorsement.

Learning Outcomes and Application This unit applies to current or aspiring surf life saving officials who are responsible for officiating surf life saving competitions or carnivals at the advanced level.

Element: Apply the rules of surf life saving at the advanced level.
  • Assess suitability of competitors and conditions for the event according to the organisation's rules and regulations, requirements of the advanced level event, relevant legislation and organisational policies and procedures.
  • Assess external influences, safety aspects and risks prior to commencement of the event.
  • Observe the event, with minimal disruption, to ensure competitors and officials are operating according to the organisation's rules and regulations.
  • Identify and document breaches of rules and regulations and address these according to organisational policies and procedures.
  • Interpret and apply the rules and regulations according to current guidelines and national trends of surf life saving.
  • Make consistent decisions based on relevant information, fairness, equity and participant safety.

Assessment must ensure demonstration of officiating multiple surf life saving events at the advanced level that are of sufficient breadth and duration to demonstrate competency and consistency of performance.

Assessment must also ensure access to:

a surf life saving event, with facilities and conditions suitable for advanced level competitors

competitors competing at a state or national level of competition

surf life saving equipment

officiating equipment and resources

rules and regulations of surf life saving.

Method of assessment

A range of assessment methods should be used to assess practical skills and knowledge. The following examples are appropriate for this unit:

observation of identifying breaches of rules and regulations by competitors and other officials

oral or written questioning to assess knowledge of the rules and regulations of surf life saving as they apply to events at the advanced level

observation of applying communication and positioning techniques while officiating surf life saving events at the advanced level

a portfolio containing records of results and documentation of decisions regarding disqualifications and penalties where required

third-party reports from a supervisor detailing officiating performance.

Holistic assessment with other units relevant to the industry sector, workplace and job role is recommended.
